I’ve talked about the importance of mindfulness for me before on a number of occasions, but it is a subject that is so often neglected in the pursuit of happiness. Sure, we all would like to be more mindful of what we eat, what we’re wearing, how we respond to different situations, etc., but unfortunately, many people don’t even realize what they are doing.
We all know that there is something we are doing that is not being mindful of. It might be something like driving. We might drive on a good day, and then the next day, we are not aware of how we were driving. We might drive on a bad day, and then the next day, we are not aware of how we were driving. We might drive on a stressful day, and then the next day, we are not aware of how we were driving.
The problem is that it can be hard to tell when these things are happening. It’s not like we can watch a movie and see the movie the same way when we are driving, or watching a movie and seeing the movie the same way when we are eating a banana. Our minds make us conscious of these situations in the moment, but because we are not aware of them, we forget that we are driving or eating or watching TV.
When we find ourselves in pain, we are not aware of how the pain is going to be resolved. Instead, we are always aware of the pain. For example, we have a conversation with a friend who asks us to take a shower to get some clean clothes. He tells us that he is a thief who has stolen something and is afraid of the rain, so he starts out in the dark trying to figure out what he should do.
The point is that pain is not always a thing. Some pain is just a reminder. “I’m afraid of my dog” is a lot more frightening than “I’m scared of my dog.” Pain is also not always a negative thing. If you want to know why you have certain behaviors, ask a person who has been paralyzed for ten years and then is paralyzed again.
Pain is not always a bad thing, and it’s very easy to get in the habit of thinking that pain is something to be avoided, but pain is not always bad. Sometimes we just have bad luck.
