This is the title of my last post. With the summer months coming to an end, I decided to go back and rework the title. In addition to the fact that mimi is only five years old, I also decided to put a little more thought into the word “mimi,” which is more appropriate considering her age (she is five).
The word mimi is a bit of an odd one. It’s used to refer to a character who’s either very young or very old. In the context of this film, mimi is not an especially young character, though she does come off as a bit of an old lady. But she’s also not a particularly old character. When it comes to mimi, she’s at least as old as the rest of us, in fact. She’s at least five years older than that.
As we know, mimi has only a year and a half of life remaining. When she is given the chance to die, she refuses. She wants to live on. She wants people to miss her, to forget her. We see her as a bit of a survivor.
For mimi, this is not a very unusual choice. She is a bit of a survivor, but the majority of people in the world at large would certainly rather have her live. Shes very old, but shes not completely old. The film is still very much a film about mimi, about her. It shows her as a survivor, but in a very, very limited way.
As we get to know her, we see that mimi’s perspective is very limited. Her point of view is focused on a handful of people who are all either old, or very young. She only wants to live for her own sake, for the sake of her loved ones. She does not want to live for the sake of the world, for the sake of the people she loves. She does not want to live for the sake of the people she hates.
In Mimi, we see a girl, but not one who is a human being. She is not just a character, like a comic book hero, or a fictional character, like a movie. Mimi is not a character. She is a person, like you and me.
Mimi is a girl who is human, and a person. She is Mimi. There is no Mimi, or Mimi’s, who is not human.
